Cannibal Holocaust from 1980 was the first "found footage" horror movie. It was about tourists mistreating some locals in the jungle only to find out the locals fight back. The movie was so realistic the director, Ruggero Deodato was in court for killing the actors. Deodato proved his innocence in the simplest way- the actors showed up in court. But Ruggero Deodato was in trouble still, he explained that the blood seemed so real cause it was real animal blood; he was found guilty of animal cruelty for killing a turtle and a couple of monkeys for their blood. -
2.
Blair Witch Project (1999). Remember when everyone thought the events of this movie were real? It was not just the viewers, apparently to get the money from producers the creators of Blair Witch Project told them about murders and weird things happening in the area; also the actors thought they were taking part in a documentary about murders that took place there. After the Police questioned the creators of Blair Witch Project about withholding evidence about crimes the confessed that everything was made up. -
3.
Una Lucertola con la pelle di donna (1971). This Italian movie had a nasty scene in which six dogs were dissected while being alive and their hearts were showed to be pumping blood. In court Carlo Rambaldi that was the special effects guy proved these were just realistic "puppets", he later worked with Stanley Kubrick, Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg and got three Oscars but was haunted by this scandal so much he burned the fake dogs. -
4.
Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985). This movie from a snuff-like series is about a weirdo who dismembered somebody with a samurai sword for 40 minutes. After a scandal this Japanese series was stopped, but even after years it brought trouble. Charlie Sheen thought this was so realistic it could actually be real and called the FBI. The FBI reached out and found out there was a "making of" movie that proved it to be fake. It was not the end of scandals regarding this movie as Swedes later also analyzed this and British fined a guy for buying Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood online. -
5.
New Terminal Hotel (2010). The movie itself was not controversial but two years after filming it there was a fire in the hotel it ws shot. Before the owner explained that he left some of the rooms like they looked in the movie to make the hotel a tourist attraction the Police called it a scene of brutal murders. -
6.
Snuff (1975). This snuff movie turned out so cheesy the creators thought no one would want to see it. But when Allan Shackleton read an article about South American snuff movies he decided to tune the movie up and show it to adult audiences. They added some scenes like crew members running on stage and killing the actress to claim this was all real. Journalists quickly figures out it was all fake but people still wanted badly to see this infamous movie. -
7.
Down in it (1989). his is not a movie but a Nine Inch Nails videoclip. The clip showed Trent Reznor running on roofs and falling to his death. The FBI thought all was real. The band used a bunch of cameras by throwing them off roofs to simulate a fall and lost one when it flew away; that camera caused a stir. When they made the camera fly up, to reverse the footage later, it went loose and later landed on a field. When a farmer found the camera he went to the Police and they contacted the FBI. The experts from FBI estimated that Reznor was a three week old corpse and the rest of Nine Inch Nails was a notorious gang that killed him. It was in 1989 so the band wasn't famous yet so no one recognized the corpse to be a much alive musician, Reznor showed up to prove he's alive and that pretty much ended the investigation; but still the clip was censored for TV.
